Nov. 30 Board Meeting

NOW I remember what is so great about a representative form of government—I meet with the Board for five hours, I study 103 pages of figures, and then I come home and send out a Reader’s Digest version of what is going on, and you can read about it in a couple of pages—in your pajamas! (well, they did give me dinner and a soft drink)

Luckily I enjoy numbers, and I find charts and graphs interesting. If you want more detail, the district site that has this information is http://www.alpine.k12.ut.us/phpApps/genericPage.php?pdid=2781

We looked at the growth history and the growth projections for ASD. The number crunchers have done a great job, using history, current enrollment, birth records and housing starts, and it all makes sense. They are conservative, and they wisely don’t claim accuracy much beyond five years, but they do run the numbers out farther on some graphs and charts. Their projections have been amazingly close to the actual enrollments.

The entry titled “1. a. enrollment growth charts”  on the right hand sidebar (paula’s commentary) starts with a graph breaking down totals for elementary, junior and high schools for five years past and projected for five years  ahead, 2005 to 2015. Next is a graph of  Total Student Enrollment from 1980 to 2015, going from 26,969 to 78,762. Wow. The third graph is Westlake High area enrollment, starting of course in 2008 and projected through 2015, by elementary, junior and high school totals, and graph four is the Lehi High area, with a drop from 2008 to 2009 as students were moved to the new Westlake cluster.

The projections led to a discussion of future needs for the district, both for capital expenses, that is keeping up current facilities, and for growth. The majority of schools projected to have the most growth were in our area: Cedar Ridge, Eaglecrest, Fox Hollow, Freedom, Harvest, Hidden Hollow, Meadow, Mountain Trails, Pony Express, Ridgeline, Sage Hills, Saratoga Shores, Snow Springs, and Traverse Mountain. That, of course, led to a discussion of the upcoming bond to meet these needs. Stay tuned for more discussion of this very important issue. . . .
